6 Sloppy Speech Habits to Avoid

Diane Diresta | Monster Contributing Writer

1. Non-words

Filler words such as “um,” “ah,” “you know,” “OK” or “like” tell the interviewer you’re not prepared and make you sound like a Valley Girl (or Boy). A better strategy is to think before you speak, taking pauses and breaths when you lose your train of thought. Everybody utters an occasional “um,” but don’t let it start every sentence.

2: Up Talk

"...selling yourself in an meeting".......you may want to correct "an" to "a" on item #3....ironic it appears on the GRAMMAR page.

    Great, helpful reminders!

I am a corporate recruiter/analyst for large company, and all these elements--I have experienced in an interview situation. Depending on level of position, we definitely place more emphasis on one or more of these areas. However, the big thing to note is that if we bring these to the attention of the candidate and ask that they correct (for example-we are phone screening to determine if next steps are possible) and they don't listen and correct--that indicates lack of awareness and an understanding of how to get to the next level through coaching etc. So, this allows us to dig a bit deeper as well. Hope that helps.
