What We Can't Teach You, Part II: Manners

What We Can't Teach You, Part II: Manners

Having manners is something that we won’t be able to teach you… you know, things like:

“Thank You”

“Excuse Me”

“I’d appreciate it…”

“Your Welcome”

Manners, if you’re lucky, were instilled in you at a very early age by your parents or another adult figure in your life. Manners are important and in the working world, especially the world of assistants, because manners help you influence people, get what you need and win the game.

But, let’s not forget, winning the game, getting what you want and influencing people is NOT the reason that you should have manners and use the above sayings to express those manners. No, you should use manners and be polite because it feels good.

Don’t believe me? Try it.

If someone is being really rude on the phone or in person you could try something like this:

“Excuse me but I’m just trying to do my job and if you please help me resolve this issue, I’ll be on my way and you won’t have to deal with me anymore. I’d really appreciate it.”

I’ll bet you $5 that the person on the other end of that conversation will change their tune and help you get what you need. And this isn’t just for when you’re working. When you get good at reading people and their moods, you’ll become a ninja master with your manners and be able to defuse charged situations, find win-win middle ground and come out looking like a superstar.

Having manners is not something we can teach you hear at ProAssisting but we hope you agree with us that having good manners is an essential part of both work and life.
