9 Simple Steps to Succeeding As a Virtual Assistant

Immediately Implement Everything You Learn with Your Clients

Lesson: Be discreet about your “extracurricular activities.” And please, stick to the legal kind.

As a new entrepreneur, one of your first orders of business will be building a list of prospects. In Chapter 6 of 9 Simple Steps to Succeeding as a Virtual Assistant, we’ll share some proven tips for attracting high-quality leads and turning them into long-term clients.

1. Browse online job postings. Thousands of international employers publish their Virtual Assistance needs online.

2. Post your own advertisement. Create your own ad heralding the benefits of your service and invite interested employers to contact you. Include your business name, professional bio, relevant experience, list of services, and standard rates.

3. Create a presence on freelance sites. Two of the most popular resources, www.eLance.com and www.Guru.com, use a bidding structure to bring buyers and providers together. When bidding, start out slowly: only submit a proposal when you’re confident that you can competently complete the job. Establish a fair rate plan for your services and stick to it.

4. Create a professional network. Communicate as much as possible with business owners and other service providers, as they can easily become clients. Treat each new contact as a potential client.

5. Join the IVAA. The International Virtual Assistants Association (www.IVAA.org) is a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of furthering the growth and development of VA careers.

6. Offer to help successful VAs. Visit the websites of established Virtual Assistants. Offer to assist with any overflow projects, research, or side work at a discounted rate. This will allow you to learn the tools of the trade from an impromptu mentor, while building your professional experience.

7. Contact your local chamber of commerce. Ask for suggestions for reaching out to business owners and entrepreneurs in your community. Also ask about upcoming networking events and mixers that it might be beneficial for you to attend.
