The Administrative Assistant Job Search

Here are some pointers to keep in mind when you actually start your job search:

Choose your words carefully: Don’t limit yourself to just “administrative assistant.” Try “administrative secretary,” “office administrator,” “office secretary,” “personal assistant” or any combination of keywords to be sure you are eligible for all available opportunities.

Think about the commute: Are you looking to walk or bike to work? Take public transportation? Or can you go by car? Would it be worth it to take a position that pays more but you have to drive in rush hour every day? Think about your day-to-day obligations, and if geography plays a part in them.

Consider the work environment: Do you want to be in a more intimate office or a large corporation? Would you rather work with techies or finance types? Be sure to be open-minded — but don’t waste your time if you know a workplace is not right for you.

Do it safely: Avoid scams such as working-from-home administrative positions, where telemarketers call promising a lucrative dream job. Also, watch out for fraudlent job offers that are just an attempt to get your personal information to steal your identity.

Network, network, network: Ask friends and family if they know of any jobs in offices, or know anyone who works in one. Get in touch with any contacts you come across, let them know how you’re connected, and ask to send your resume to them personally rather than through an impersonal HR department.

Use the right search tools: Rather than Googling “administrative assistant” use a job search engine where employers have posted available positions, which should produce more reliable and easy-to-sort results.
