Ugly Ducklings Need Not Apply

Ugly Ducklings Need Not Apply

Eve Tahmincioglu | CareerDiva.net

A recent study by the University of Florida links salary and looks. “We’ve found that, even accounting for intelligence, a person’s feeling of self-worth is enhanced by how attractive they are and this, in turn, results in higher pay,” said Timothy Judge, the study’s author.

And a UK poll of over 2000 employers found that managers are more likely to give the gig to a good looking guy or gal:

88% of respondents who interview admit that they have at some stage chosen candidates because they were attractive rather than based on skills and experience

92% of respondents say that appearance at the job interview can influence their decision on who gets the job

Why not have a site that caters to such biases?

I wondered what kind of background the founder of the site, Ralph van Troost, had so I asked Shuster.

“The founder has had several websites (primarily dating sites) in the past,” he wrote in an email.

I was expecting a bio and maybe a photo of the guy, so we could all vote on whether we thought van Troost was indeed beautiful.

I did a quick Google search on the guy, who appears to be from the Netherlands, and found he’s all about getting on the next big thing. The dating site he founded caters to tree hungers. It’s called DateForTrees.com. I found a story on Mashable.com in 2008 about the site, but alas, when you go to the site there is nothing there but ads.

I’m thinking this beauty site may go down the same road for van Troost. But I digress.

Shuster suggested I go on the site and check it out. I went to it but realized I’d have to sign up to see how it works. I was unwilling to contribute too much more to the validity of the site, so I researched a bit to see if anyone else has used it.
