How to Break News of Your Pregnancy at Work

You’re past the first trimester and it’s time to share the news of your pregnancy with your boss. Be prepared- not everyone will be as excited as you are that you’re pregnant.

First and foremost: Be honest. Don’t say you’re coming back to work if you’ve decided to try being a stay-at-home mom. If you want part-time work to be an option, mention it up front. If not, let your boss know that you’re fully committed to continuing to work after the allotted time away. As soon as your boss has been alerted, set up a time to meet with your human resources department to discuss the paperwork necessary for maternity leave.

Once the rest of your office is aware of your pregnancy, be prepared for a barrage of questions from your co-workers. All of the questions your boss may not have asked, everyone else will. “Are you coming back? Who’s going to take over for you?” Think about how your answers will affect your office. Someone is going to pick up the slack while you’re gone, so be professional in your answers and think of the company.

Don’t accept negativity or lack of professionalism from your boss or co-workers. As an employee, you are entitled to be treated fairly. If you feel that your company is treating you unfairly since you’ve announced your pregnancy, take notes and keep a paper trail. Take the information to your HR department and express your concerns.

Being a mom will be a tough transition, but it’s a life changing experience that can actually help broaden your horizons as a career woman. Remember, having a baby is a common part of life for a woman.

If people didn’t have babies, you company office would be empty.
