5 Risky Fashion Trends and How to Wear Them

It’s so easy to be seduced. You pass by a store window and see lust-worthy fashions that are calling — even screaming — your name.

At that point, consider putting your hands over your ears and repeating, “Not listening. Not listening.”

Here’s why. Some of the most popular styles for fall and winter should come with warning labels: Exercise extreme caution! Wear at your own risk! What looks great on a 6-foot glamazon with giraffe legs might not be the best choice for us mere mortals who sit at a desk, roll a cart down a grocery aisle or transport the kids from dawn to dusk.

Before you give in to temptation, here are some guidelines and warning signs to help you decide what not to wear.

Warning: You’re likely to have people thinking you never made it home the night before. Or that you’ve got a noon audition for “American Idol.”

Make it work? A little sparkle goes a long way. Sequins embellishing a sweater, beret or scarf are a better choice. Pair your twinkly item with “tough” fashions in leather or denim. Black sequins, shiny or matte, are easier to pull off than color. And never wear them on parts of your body you aren’t eager to call attention to. These leggings, for instance, show off every lump and bump. Just a peek between boot and skirt might work if you’re young or daring.

— Try: Forever 21, $17.80,

Warning: Are you trying to shriek, “I’ve got fat thighs!”? The design stretches out on your legs’ biggest parts with the focus just where you don’t want it. And bright colors amplify the problem.

Make it work? “You have to be careful with colored legs,” says Gregg Andrews, a Nordstrom fashion director. For the lucky who were born with great gams, these work, but otherwise stick with heavier texture in dark shades. Bright colors can look a little too Halloween.

— Try: Urban Outfitters, $14 (2 for $20),
