35 Tips for Working in Your Workout

You had great intentions. You joined a gym. You bought a treadmill. You bought the Wii Fit. But somewhere between the commitment and the reality, you found reason after reason that kept you from getting to it today. Tomorrow, you promised yourself, only to repeat the process all over again.

If this sounds familiar, don’t despair. It is a trap so many women fall into, largely because we set too grandiose a plan for ourselves and can’t find or make the time to follow it. We also excuse ourselves because we feel swamped with work, home and family responsibilities. The path to a better fitness regimen starts with just a few steps. Here are 35 ways you might not have considered to help you work in time for working out.

1. Make it a priority. Nothing will happen if you aren’t committed to trying.

2. Start right now! Tomorrow there will be another reason to wait. Print this list and circle the ones you can do immediately and do them.

3. Make it easier to fit the time in by breaking your regimen into smaller blocks. Ten minute, even five minutes of exercise is beneficial. And by breaking it into manageable chunks, you can do it several times a day.

4. Find ways to force yourself to exercise while you are doing something else. For example, don’t look for a close parking space, choose to park further from your destination and walk the extra distance. If you are going to a store at one end of the mall, park at the other end. Get off of the bus or subway one stop earlier, and walk the difference. Have your carpool pick you up at the end of your street rather than your driveway.
