Going Green at Your Desk

Going Green at Your Desk

August 14, 2008

“Going Green” is becoming more and more popular but what exactly does it mean to “go green”? It seems like every person and/or company has a different definition of what it means – contains xx% post-consumer waste, xx% recycled content, made from sustainable sources, etc. I think the easiest way to define ‘going green’ is – changing your actions to improve the environment. So how can you make your desk and/or office greener? Here are a few easy ways:

• Use a glass or refillable bottle instead of bottled water. This will help keep plastic out of the landfills and money in your pocket. Try using a Brita pitcher or other filtration system if don’t like straight tap water.

• Bring your lunch to work. Not only is it healthier to bring lunch from home but you also eliminate the extra packaging that comes with fast food.

• Reduce paper use. Next time you go to print off an extra copy of a document think about whether you really need it. When possible, print on the front and back of the paper.

• Use natural light. If you are near windows, try keeping the lights off as much as possible.

• Alter clothing choices instead of using a heater or fan. Instead of turning up the heater or lowering the AC, add or remove a layer of clothing. This not only helps the environment but also your wallet (or your boss’ wallet).

o A commercial for Planet Green gives a funny example of this concept.

• Turn off your computer and monitor. Shutting your computer and monitor down when you aren’t using them saves a lot of power usage.

There are many ways to “go green” in the office once you start thinking about it. Look around you – are there any steps you can take to make your life greener?
