7. SSDs Are Cool, but They Don’t Make Sense Yet

What costs $500, stores only 64GB, and doesn’t make your computer much faster? Sadly, right now the answer is an average laptop solid-state drive. Sure, these flash-based drives are cool and light, but for the next year or so they’ll be terrible values for most buyers.

Spinning discs will soon go the way of the dinosaur, as evidenced by the soaring speeds, growing capacities, and falling prices in each successive generation of SSDs, but the value just isn’t there yet.

In part, that’s because laptop designs have long lifecycles. Vendors can’t just swap new parts into a laptop case like they can in a desktop. So the SSDs you find in current notebooks may not match up to the ones you’re reading about now. That’s changing, but not fast enough. So while you might be able to grab an affordable 128GB SSD off the shelf, you won’t find one in any current laptop. And if your only option is a 64GB SSD for an extra $500, you’re much better off going with a fast, high-capacity hard drive for your next purchase.
