Posted about 1 year ago Okay, so two of my coworkers often bring their kids into work, but when I asked my boss if I could bring in my dog, she looked at me like I was crazy. Whatever! What do you guys think? |

Posted about 1 year ago I once did temp work at a place that designed toys, etc. for pets...the employees brought all sorts of animals to work (bunny rabbits, cats, hamsters, chincillas, you name it!).

Posted about 1 year ago I'd prefer a dog over an annoying kid, so long as the dog doesn't pee on the printer.

Posted 10 months ago Ugh...I'm going to get a backlash for this, because I always do, but I am SO sick of seeing dogs everywhere I go. I love dogs, and I will repeat that because all most of you are going to see is my "I am SO sick of seeing dogs everywhere I go" statement. I go into a grocery store, any one, it doesn't matter. On the outside of the building there is a notice stating that dogs are not allowed. You would think that that is SO obvious, I mean, there is FOOD inside of the store. I walk in. (I love dogs) There is at least 2 customers with dogs inside of the store. The store that carries fresh produce and other foods. Not all dogs are even inside of the buggies (shopping cart/whatever you want to call them) most of the time they are only on a leash. Not that any of this matters, the point is they are inside of a store getting their hair, maybe pee, everywhere!! This is disgusting and irritating. My husband is allergic to dogs! A lot of people are! Why do people feel the need to bring their dogs EVERYWHERE they go?! I was working part-time at a big name retailer 2 months ago. Same notice on their door. Same amount of dogs inside. I watched dogs peeing on the bed displays, the bathroom wastebaskets on the lower shelves, the towels etc. (I love dogs) Dogs DO NOT NEED TO GO EVERYWHERE YOU GO! (I love dogs) DOGS HAVE NO PLACE INSIDE OF A GROCERY OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF STORE!!!!! (I love dogs) Again, my husband is allergic to dogs. Our children most likely will be, too. I find it funny that all of these parents are going out of their way to try and get schools and parents to stop having/bringing peanuts and peanut based procucts in the schools. It's funny because a) I know a few of these parents and they have dogs and will almost kill you if you say anything about not bringing dogs everywhere they go and b) these people aren't too shy to impose something on the rest of us, but if you say that you are allergic to a dog, they make you suffer through it anyway because you must be lieing. (I love dogs) (I love dogs) DOGS HAVE NO PLACE AT THE OFFICE, AT THE STORES, AT THE GROCERY STORES!!!! KNOCK THIS INSANE OBSESSION OFF! NOT ALL OF US WANT TO BE AROUND DOGS!!! (I love dogs)

Posted 10 months ago I love kids. I love dogs. I have a few rug monkeys, I have a dog. However... I agree with the philosophy of there is a time and a place, whether it be dogs or kids. (unless it is a special occasion, such as Bring Your Kids to Work Day, one employer I had allowed dogs on this day as well as rug monkeys) I work in a place of business, I come in to put in my time, do the work that I am being paid to do, I don't need the distractions of small children asking me "watcha doin??" or a dog trying to eat my lunch. Former in-laws thought it was okay to bring their little white dogs everywhere, including my house one holiday season. Without asking me first. Got to my ex, he put our dog outside for the duration of the visit. In the winteritme. When my dog slept in the bed with me. Needless to say, my alpha doggie managed to squeeze in the back door, attacked the little white doggie invader. Unfortunately, she died as a result. The in-laws stay at a hotel, and don't bring dogs to my house anymore. A time and a place, people. I don't want to trip over your pet while I am trying to get some groceries. I don't want to have to pry my stapler out of a kid's hands while trying to get a report out on time.

Posted 10 months ago I don't see any problem in bringing a well-behaved dog to work so long as people don't have allergies. A woman in my office brings her adorable pug in once every couple months, and it brightens my day! Here's an article on bringing dogs to work you should check out.

Posted 10 months ago The only place I take my dogs are to places like petco or petsmart. The only time that I see that they have the right to be in a grocery store is if they are a service dog and in most states the stores cannot disallow service dogs or else they'd be discriminating against the disabled. Other then that the only place I've seen dogs and usually it's a little dog is at a store like Lowe's.

Posted 10 months ago Thanks for the article! With these types of rules in place, having a dog in the workplace CAN be a positive. I just hope that if this ever becomees reality in my workplace, that I know about Bring Doggie to Work Day in advance. I'll be sure to take my Zyrtec.

| Posted 10 months ago A dog is a dog, while yes they are family they are still a dog. No I do not want to see them is a store especially in a shopping cart where I PUT MY FOOD...how gross! I don't know how clean you keep your dog, do you bathe your dog often? Is it licking the cart, rubbing it's butt on the cart or doing other doggie stuff that dogs do. I to LOVE dogs but there is a time and a place for dogs. People it is OK to leave your pet at home, they will not go crazy. You do not have to bing your dog everywhere. My sister inlaw brings her pug everywhere. This dog is not well trained, even though she thinks he is. He is a food whore, you cannot eat without this dog getting right in your face and that drives me crazy. No dogs DO NOT belong at work, fine if there was a special day i'll go with the flow, i'll even bring my dog in and let it bite all of your dogs then maybe you'll leave your dog home next time. Seriously my dog would not bite, she is just 15 years old, does not hear well and you have to make yourself known to her, no sneaking up on her. (smile) Oh Kids...belong in daycare NOT at the office, fine bring them after you return from maternity leave so we can see them, and then that's good. And when you are at a restaurant, be considerate of the other diners...if your kid is screaming take the kid out and make them be quiet and then come back in. Oh NEVER NEVER let me hear you say..."if you just be quiet or good for a few more minutes, i'll go buy or get you this or that" BIG mistake! You'll be sorry, you are forming a huge problem for yourself. If you kid is being a problem punisment is what they get not reward! OK now i'm just ranting...Sorry!

Posted 10 months ago Long story short - I once had a handmade, quite expensive and elaborately woven wool rug from the Middle East. My three cats never bothered my rug. Along comes a dear friend without telling me she was bringing her toy piddle-poodle, who promptly piddles on my rug. After that one single incident, the cats started urinating and defecating on this rug constantly, scratching it and eventually shredding it. Never bring pets along without asking first!!! (and I love dogs too, BTW, I'm just not allowed to have any where i currently live!)

Posted 10 months ago What about "seeing eye dogs?" I don't like dogs in a grocery store (my child is allergic); but I give her allergy medication, because she needs to learn to live with her allergies. We cannot control polen either and she is allergic to that as well. I have seen a person with a "seeing eye dog" going to the bakery counter to buy a sandwich... If dogs are not allowed, then at least these stores might make a room for the eye dogs and have an employee take care of the person's needs... The person can then pick up her dog and go to the street without being run over by a car in the parking lot. Dogs are used by people with disabilities that do need them. I just recently learned that dogs are being used by people who cannot hear as well... So, at least in the case of dogs who are trained to help people with disabilities; I believe dogs should be allowed. If the concern is the dogs hair in the food, then maybe grocery stores should have a separate room for such dogs that come with the customer, and have an employee help the customer go through the isles. Remember, a deaf person cannot hear someone behind her saying "excuse me."

Posted 9 months ago I dont mind seeing eye dogs, but I am sick and tired of people bringing their dogs to work! OK, I have a phobia. I don't like dogs, i don't like cats. etc.... I hate when people's dogs stand on their feet next to me, and bark, and frigen lick me. I mean it's just a respect thing. What if I'm friggen allergic? Your here to work, not to play with a stupid dog all day. sorry dog lovers, no disrespect... just I really really do not dogs.

I thought that it would be pretty obvious that seeing-eye dogs are the exception to the rule, even though that is still just as bad, but there is no esy way around that situation. People need to feel independent, especially when disabled. The room to have them sit and wait while a grocer goes to retrieve their groceries won't fly. If people wanted that, they'd stay at home and have the groceries delivered. It's all about self-reliance, which is HUGE! I know this because a) That's what I would do and b) My bff's mom has a seeing-eye dog and we've had many discussions on this topic. So, there's really no way around the seeing-eye dog in the restaurant's, grocery stores, whatever. Well, you get these dog-obsessed people who think that it's only FAIR that they can bring their dogs into these establishments as well. Because what are we all but tall children, and if Billy gets to have something, I want something too, gosh darnit! And if I don't get my way, I will throw a big fit until I get what I want! Waaaaaa! This, folks, is America. We are a sad bunch of whiny little brats, all wanting our way...everyone else be damned. DOGS, CATS, RATS, RABBITS, FERRETS...WHATEVER PET YOU HAVE...DO NOT BELONG IN PUBLIC STORES, WORK PLACES, GROCERY STORES, RESTAURANTS, ETC!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE ANIMALS. TAKE THEM TO THE PET STORE, IF YOU REALLY WANT THEM TO GO SHOPPING WITH YOU! |

| Posted 9 months ago Not to sound mean or condescening here... but WHY on earth would anyon want to bring in a dog (or any pet for that matter) into their workplace?? Yeah, I know that sometimes people bring in their slobbering, crying babies for everyone to fawn over them and tell them how cute they are, but that's just because they excited to be a parent(s) and they want to show off their little bundle of joy with everyone.. and hey, they only bring them in to show them off for an hour or two and then they leave.. so no harm done. But a pet - or a dog, in this case is totally different for several reasons: 1. Are you talking about bringing in your dog for an office visit- well OK, but what if he/she bites a co- worker or makes a mess on the floor? Who would be responsible for that? Does your company cover pet accidents in the workplace, and hey that is a valid question since either of those things could happen. 2. WHY would you bring your pet- knowing that others may be allergic? (and sadly, no one I know is allergic to new babies, so they are fair game.) 3. Where would your dog be going? To an enclosed office space or to a bunch of cubicles where there is usually a lot of activivty going on? What if your dog gets scared by all the activity and gets loose in the office.. again, see #1.. does your office cover pet accidents?? I think these are just a few of the valid points about why bringing dogs (or any pets) into the office is a bad idea. I know we spend 8 or more hours a day in the office but it is not our home and we have to remember that and we also have to be respectful of the others that we work with.

Posted 9 months ago I like dogs and kids. However, I believe neither belong in any workplace during operation. I also believe that kids are far more distracting than dogs in the workplace in general. And infants are even more of a distraction. Not based on the actions of the infants, but rather the fact that many employees feel the need to stop working to go compliment the parent and coo at the baby. At my last job, my cubicle was at the intersection of the two main hallways, which was a frequent gathering for roamers. The normal gossip sessions were distracting enough, oddly even more so when whispered as I have a much harder time ignoring the sound of whispers versus normal voices. It was far more of a distraction for me when someone brought their children or baby as I became much less productive while dreading the fact that I was the next stop to show them off. When someone brought a dog, they almost always walked it straight to their office and offered no distractions. Now, I will say that I may be more tolerant of dogs in the workplace since I worked for two years at the Cleveland Society for the Blind and dogs there are a foregone conclusion and of course, must be allowed in that situation. I must be much luckier than one of the previous posters because in thirty-eight years of life, I have never once seen a dog in any store except when I was escorting my boss and his seeing-eye dog, Winston around. It does not seem to be a serious problem to me. To the OP, it is my opinion that if kids are allowed, pets should be allowed as well under whatever rules govern the bringing the kids. Neither should be allowed, but if one is, so should the other.

Posted 9 months ago Try living in California...dogs are in every store you step in...with health codes CLEARLY pasted on the entrance stating that dogs are not allowed inside. They are starting to do this in Colorado, too, because all of the (unwanted) Californians are moving out there, along with their annoying habits. People have no sense of respect anymore. Everyone is out for themselves, eff the other person. And I'd be LIVID if I paid good, hard earned money on an item, took it home and there is dried dog p*ss all over it. UGH!

Posted 5 months ago Unless it is a medical condition leave animals at home. Unless there is an emergancy and no other alternative, don't bring kids to work. If they have to come, they should be instructed to stay in your cube or office and to be very very quiet.

Posted 5 months ago I guess I am different because I hate to be around children but have a high tolerance level for dogs. I would rather go to a store, or a restaurant or anywhere and be exposed to a leashed, trained pet than to have a screaming, whining, tantrum throwing child seated next to me. There is far less mess on the floor from a dog that there generally is from a kid dropping things and leaving a mess. Just check out the floor under the table at a restaurant where children sit the next time you go out. Gross. I have dogs and mine are all Canine Good Citizen certified, obedience trained and one is in the process of becoming a therapy dog to visit nursing homes and hospice care facilities. I bring them to work for socialization and if you are allergic, don't come in my office. You can call me at my extension and we can get anything done that you need to be done. I guess it is pretty obvious which I would prefer in an office setting; my trained dog in a down and stay as opposed to a child running all over the place and not listening. It's a no brainer.

Posted 5 months ago Seeing eye dogs and therapy dogs are being utilized as DOGS and are generally well trained and behaved, serve a valuable purpose, and are well groomed. What bugs me is the person who treats their dog like it is their child. If you need another child, adopt a human one. I do not think it is cute that your mental state allows you to believe your doggie child is the same as othe people's real children. I was having a conversation with a co-worker whose high school senior had just gotten early acceptance to the college or her choice. Our "doggie mom" just had to interject about when her little snookums went to obedience training at doggie school. Get real. Is there really any comparison here?

Posted 5 months ago I hit the send button too soon. I think that there is a comparison. Just as the parent of the human child is proud of her child's accomplishments, so is the pet owner of her canine companion. I applaud the pet owner for being responsible enough to get the training. As far and the comment about if you want a child, adopt a human one, not everyone thinks having a child is the life for them. I personally have NEVER wanted a child and the drama that generally ensues with them at any given point. My dog gives me unconditional love where as most kids I see these days give their parents nothing but grief. How many of you hear your coworkers complaing that the kid is a terror, won't listen, threatens to call Social Services on them when the kid doesn't get it's way? I hear that story all the time. So thank you for the advice but I think I will continue to be a dog owner that may treat my dog like a child occasionally and leave adopting the human children of the world to others who feel more inclined to live with the aggrevation.

Posted 3 months ago Neither belong in the work place. I am not paying you to do your job halfway because Fido needs a walk and a treat or Junior needs a diaper change and a feeding. Life is about responsibility, and that means that if you decide to have children or pets and still hold a job then you must bear the responsibility of finding care for them for the time that you are supposed to be at work.
