Posted 8 months ago My name is Kim Cox. I'm in college--finishing my last semester--for an associates degree in office systems technology. My short-term goal is to finish and get a position as an administrative assistant, preferrably with the VA Hospital. Because of the tight job market now, and even though I have experience, I felt I needed the education to go along with it. Also, my age works against me too, and I felt I needed as much going for me as possible. My long-term goals are to continue my education by finishing medical office administration classes and take Web design classes. I actually do Web design and maintenance in my spare time, and I also write books. I'm a published author of a novel, 2 novellas in anthologies, short stories, and one article on How To Create Your Own Personal Web Page. |

Posted 8 months ago Hi, my name is Conni Hall. I just moved to NC from GA December 2008. My position of 10 yrs as a Contracts Coordinator was eliminated last August. I am open to moving anywhere for a job using my skills and experience. I am also looking into taking Medical Administration classes while pursuing a new job. I have 15 years experience and a Certificate in Legal Assisting, but am still not getting any job offers. I feel with my age going against me, I need a degree to help me get into a management position. The competition is brutal today.

Posted 8 months ago Hi Conni, Welcome to the group. I hear you about the age thing. That's why I decided to go back to college too. Here's a link to a job for Contracts Administrator. Not sure if this is what you've done in the past or it's something different. It's in Black Mountain, North Carolina--near Asheville. Let me know if this is what you're looking for or not. http://www.kearfott.com/images/stories/careers/nc/cont_admin.pdf

To me the industry doesn't really matter the paper is all the same as well as the fax machine, copier pc software etc. just need to know how they use there's. We just have to believe we can do anything with ease. Oh dress the part in sales most women where the boobs hanging out that's the world I just left working for a big builder. | Posted 7 months ago Hi everybody. My name is Rita and I currently reside in Summerville, SC. For over 20 years now I've had several kinds of admin positions. I've been Executive, Administrative, Sales Support and Research Assistant. I've worked in Government and Public Affairs, Managed Care, Business Operations and Marketing departments. I'm currently researching starting my own home based business and believe I may need to head back to college to get more education. I love books and especially love reading the bible and other inspiritational literature, as well as Business and Finance info. I'm so thankful for the Internet and its endless possibilties of retrieving information as well as great networking sites like AdminSecret and Facebook. I'm also currently on a journey of trying to lose weight since January 24. I'd like to lose two dress sizes. So far, I've lost 11 pounds. It's taking a while, but I'm taking it slow this time and hope that I'll keep it off forever. I'm about 5'10" so people don't think I weigh that much, but coming from what I used to be, believe me I've got some weight to lose!

Posted 7 months ago Hi Rita! Welcome to the Carolinians' Group. Wow! You sound like you have a lot of adminstrative assistant experience. Are you working now? What type of home based business would you like to start? I would love to work from home. I do a bit of Web design at home and I love to write. One of my books was published a few years ago, I have two novellas published in anthologies, a few shorts published, and articles. I haven't written much lately--going to school and now looking for work takes up most of my time. But I have another novella started I need to finish and multiple books in different stages of completion--one close to being finished. I think I have some pictures of my books under the photos section of my profile, and I have an author Web site at kimcox.org. What advice would you give to others looking for an administrative assistant position? And what would you like take if you go back to school? I graduate in May with an AAS degree in Office Systems Technology. I want to finish the medical office administration classes and get a certificate in accounting as well. Then I would like to take some Web design just because I love playing with Web sites.

Posted 7 months ago Hello, my name is Liliana and I just moved to NC from California a month ago. I am originally from Italy and moved to the US 18 years ago. I have 15 years experience as an Executive Assistant and a degree from my country, but also working on obtaining one from the US (4 more classes!). I have not actively looked for a job in NC (Charlotte area) yet, as technically I am still employed in California (Maternity leave), but soon I will have to. I am terribly worried about the economy and the possibility of really finding anything. It seems that there aren't too many EAs positions available in the Charlotte area. I have worked for several companies and different industries throughout the years, but my preference is to work for accounting firms. I am glad I found this website, so maybe I can find some answers to my questions and concerns. I still have too much on my plate...trying to adjust to the new area, buying a new house, handling a new baby, but I am hoping to have everything under control in the next couple of months! Please any advice or comments are very welcome (on any matter!)

Posted 7 months ago Hi and Welcome, Liliana. I hear your frustration. I've been in college for almost 2 years now (graduate in May) after getting laid off. In some of the classes I've taken dealt with searching for jobs, writing resumes, and writing cover letters. I used to see all these wonderful positions that were just right for me and I was so afraid that there wouldn't be anything when I finished school. I applied for one position in the Fall, but one of the requirements was the degree I hadn't quite obtained yet so I don't believe I was even considered. And I believe that was too soon to begin searching. In the last few months I have found quite a few openings to apply for but I don't know how many were legitimate jobs, because some results were e-mails taking me to a page to answer a bunch of questions, and then wanted me to attend some online colleges. I don't know much about the hiring situation in the Charlotte area, but I do know of one lady who lives in that area that was laid off and it didn't take her very long to find another position. But that was about a year ago. My oldest son lives in Charlotte, and I'm originally 65 miles east of Charlotte. When you get ready to start actively applying, let me know, and perhaps I can ask the lady I know to e-mail you or something. And if I do hear anything, I'll let you know. Good luck.

Posted 7 months ago Also, I would recommend checking the North Carolina Employment Security Commission Job Bank at (www.ncesc.com). You can type in your zip code and how far you're willing to travel. Check usajobs.gov (you can search it the same way) for federal jobs, your county Web site, and state Website for positions. Register with your temp agencies because most of the time these positions can become permanent. Many recommend job fairs. You can also register with monster.com and careerbuilder.com. I found some listings on Craig's List as well, but I believe this is where some of the ones that weren't legitimate came from.

Posted 7 months ago Hi Everyone! My name is Tracy and I am currently an Office Manager/Accountant for a small IT company in Mountain View, CA. I will be moving to Fayetteville, NC in June to be near my boyfriend who is a Librarian at Methodist University. I have over 15 years of experience in a wide range of support positions - not unlike you, Rita! - including Marketing Coordinator and Executive Assistant. The industry I work in doesn't concern me since I enjoy learning about new things. Fayetteville has a few schools, so I'm hoping that my Community College experience might help me catch on there. I am working on getting my QuickBooks User Certification, but that is the only education I'm taking on right now. We'll see if that needs to change. My interests include hiking, reading books, sports, watching anime & sci-fi, music and art. I, too, am a bit worried about the economy and potentially being a burden on my boyfriend, but this is a leap of faith I am ready to take! But after being unemployed for almost 2 years during the dotcom bust, I know I can survive. Hey, that sounds like a song... Mostly I am looking forward to a new place and new people!

Posted 7 months ago Hello Ladies, My name is Violita I live in Wylie, Texas. I have done Reception/admin work for 10+ years. Currently I am looking for work due to layoff. It has been almost a year now and I still can't get anything. It is so disheartening! I also am experiencing the age descrimination. So I can relate to that. If I get a job soon I will feel like I won the lottery! I am so glad to meet you ladies.

Posted 7 months ago Hi Tracey! Welcome! I'm sure you'll find something. Stay positive, you sound like a survivor. Fayetteville (old stomping grounds in my twenties) has a military base near by so I imagine there are many government positions there. Check usajobs.gov for positions. One obstacle may be veterans and veteran's families living there because they get priority for employment. One town near there too is Raeford that may not be too far to drive according to where in Fayetteville you move to. I have a cousin who lives in Fayetteville as well. I'll ask her if she knows of any positions. Anyway good luck. Not sure if you saw it, but I posted some jobs and a job search I did for NC and SC areas under "Jobs of Interest" topic. Note: I hear Federal government positions take a while, so it's never to early to start applying. From applying to going to work took 9 months for one lady.

Posted 7 months ago Welcome Violita! I hear you about the age thing. So far it hasn't been a problem for me although I was warned it may be. I'm 53, but I can usually pass for at least 10 years younger, so that helps. You don't have to put your age on an application or resume if you don't want to. Have you thought about going back to college--maybe taking some computer type programs? Not sure about your area, but most of the time you can get government funding that will pay your tuition and books when you've been laid off. That's what I did. I'm actually just beginning my work search because I graduate in May. I went through two programs WIA (for displaced workers) and TRA for lay off due to the company I worked for moving overseas. Like I tell everyone, check those government jobs. I have a friend who works at the VA Hosp., and she said they have the best retirement plan if you work there at least 15 years. Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Posted 7 months ago Hi. My name is Debbie and I live in Columbia, SC. I have been unemployed for about a month from my Administrative Assistant's job with a commercial real estate company. I was with them 8-1/2 years. The job market really stinks here right now. I have only seen 2 or 3 jobs that I would even be interested in since I've been unemployed. Two of them are with the government. I have passed the 1st round of information screening for IRS and I really have my fingers crossed for that one. Wish me luck!

Posted 7 months ago Hi Debbie. Welcome! Just an observation, but I was looking on the www.usajobs.gov site the other day for a friend and did like a 100 mile radius from a zip code nearby, and it seemed like they were a lot of positions for Columbia, S.C. Not sure what the positions were because that was a little further than what he needed, but you may want to check it out. Good luck. Kim

Posted 7 months ago Okay, I should've finished reading before I reploed. Good luck on the IRS position. I just heard from the position I applied for with the National Park Service, and I was qualified but didn't rank in the highest, so I won't be considered for that one this time. Kim

Posted 7 months ago Hello Everyone, My name is Julie and I work for Affiliated Computer Services in Cary, NC. I am a NC native and I have been in the administrative field for over 20 years. I started with ACS just last month after being unemployed for over five months so I am just getting settled and learning the intricacies of my job. I connected with the Admin Secret website via the Office Dynamics website and I am very glad that I did. It's nice to know there is a whole network of Carolina admins just like me! Julie

Posted 7 months ago Welcome Julie! So happy to have you here. I too just started a new position this week. I'm still feeling a bit unorganized but they seem to like how I'm doing things so far. We're pretty much just getting organized and feeling our way through it. It's a service they haven't had it in I think 5 years. So we're updating a lot of the material. I'd been out of work for almost 2 years, but I've been attending college and so only began looking for work the last couple of months. Good luck on your new position. Kim

Posted 6 months ago Hello everyone, My name is Natalyn and I reside in Houston, TX. I was searching the internet for forums on medical administrative assistants and ran across this one. I've noticed that some of the members are in the same situation as I -- having been laid off a job and looking to begin a new career. I've worked as a legal assistant for 28 years. During this time period, I've worked at five major law firms and was laid off from four of them. The other I quit. After the last layoff in March 2009, I decided to leave the legal arena and try something new and different. I've enrolled in school to take a court as a Medical Administrative Assistant. I begin classes in about 3 weeks and I'm very excited and nervous at the same time! Excited because I'll be learning something new and nervous because I'm approaching my 50th birthday this year and I'm feeling a bit intimidated to be starting a new career at this stage in my life. I'd like to participate in this forum to learn and exchange ideas about the medical profession. Specifically, I'd like to do medical billing and coding and eventually move up the ranks to manage a medical office. There are so many certification designations -- it's mind boggling! I'm looking forward to participating!

Posted 6 months ago Hi Natalyn! Welcome! You have your goals, and you are on the right track. I've worked in offices for over ten years. I was laid off in August 2007. I stopped work on a Friday, and started college the following Monday. I finish this month with an associates in Office Systems Technology. However, I only like 4 classes to also finish the Medical Office Administration which I plan to complete part-time while working. I recently found a temporary position that will last at least 26 weeks. The hardest class I found in MOA is Basic Anatomy and Physiology. I thought since it was basic it would be too hard, but it is still pretty in depth. My instructor said that when a student takes Anatomy that they should know that it's like taking two very hard classes. The rest I've found pretty easy. But just remember that when you sign up for the Anatomy class, try to take easier classes with it, and don't take as many that semester. Maybe 3. I took a full load, and one of my other classes was pretty hard as well.

| Posted 6 months ago Hi All....My name is Kim I live in Monroe about 10 miles from Charlotte, NC. I have worked in all types of companies from Television Evangelist to Commercial Real Estate. Since moving to North Carolina from Florida I have been unable to stay in a position for more than 2 years, my last position was working for a marketing company with a focus on NASCAR and when sponsorships started to pull out representing certain drivers my position was eliminated. I have found this to be some kind of crazy blip on my resume now, being there 5 months and then laid off. It took me almost 8 months to find that position after being laid off from a textile company whose jobs were sent over overseas. I loved being an EA at the Textile Company and thought I would be there for the rest of my working career. Now again I find myself out looking for a position, I am applying to positions with a dumbed down version of my resume. I am looking for something part time, full time heck… anytime would be great. It has been 5 months since I have been on an interview and I wonder what I am doing wrong. I am so ready to pack it in and call it a day. I don’t want to start a class since I don’t really know what I want to do (which is so strange to say since I am 47).
I am wondering what to do next; I am frustrated and feeling inadequate and really just want to go back to work. Sitting at home waiting for a call any call is a drag. Now my recruiter has pretty much moved their focus to accounting side of the business and they now longer have focus on any administrative positions and today I was told I was over qualified for a call center position. So now what?? Please tell me I am not alone in this pile of poo.....
Thank for listening
Kim

Posted 4 months ago Hi Kim! Glad to see you here. I too worked in the office at a textile plant (many years) that moved overseas. I did opt to go to school and get a degree (something I always wanted to do and it gave me a sense of accomplishment and more self-confidence). I graduated in May, and I found a job, but it's temporary full-time and I'm not sure how long it will last. I mean it's slow now and the program I'm work with is coming to a close soon. From what I understand, they're suppose to keep me on a while longer, but I'm not sure in what compacity or how long yet. However, I have been applying for some positions if they are something I really would love, but no hard core applying yet. Usually, for me to apply for it, it has to pay more than what I'm making now, be permanent (or going permanent), and has benefits (health insurance at least). I'll not trade one temp position for another. I would just like to say that you're not alone. From what I hear, employers no longer look down on potential employees if they have worked for many different companies because that is the times and the world we live in today. I've been trying to find a Fed. Gov. position but I always receive a reply that while I'm qualified that I don't score high enough (I guess compared to other applicants). The last one I applied for, I thought, well, they're hiring 5 people so perhaps I can get it. I'm hoping they have an internship or something like that soon that perhaps I can get my foot in the door. Makes me wonder if they look at my age and subtract points for that. For now, I am working the temporary position and going to college part time for a diploma and another degree. I have funding at least for this year, and hope for a scholarship for the next year in order to complete what I need. I have been toying with the idea of virtual assistant and hope maybe to break into that. That would be my dream job, to work at home for the rest of my life. Anyway, good luck.
