Learn How to Type Faster With These 5 Pointers
Duke Xenner
I haven’t been practicing lately so I only top out at about 95wpm (words per minute), but with continued training it is fully possible to kick your typing speed up to 160wpm or even higher. Why am I mentioning these speeds? Because the average person’s handwriting speed is somewhere around 25-35wpm where the words are short and speed is at the maximum. I only write 20wpm by pencil so when I’m typing, the advantage is pretty obvious.
Here is how you can learn to type fast:
1 Learn the Layout
The primary reason why it takes a long time to punch the right key is that you have to find the right button. Memorize the positions of the keys. Be able to close your eyes and visualize every letter, number, and symbol on the keyboard. If you can do that, then when you are typing, you are not searching for the keys but instead pushing them.
2 Put your hands in the ‘Home’ position
Notice how the ‘F’ and ‘J’ buttons on your keyboard have a special groove on them. Put the index(pointing) finger of your left hand on the ‘F’ and the three fingers left of the index finger on ‘D’, ‘S’, and ‘A’. Now put your right hand’s index finger on the ‘J’, and the other three fingers to the right of it on ‘K’, ‘L’, and ‘;’. Rest both of your thumbs on the ‘spacebar’. Feel the grooves of the ‘F’ and ‘J’ buttons under your index fingers. Your hands are now in the home position. This is the centered position which puts your fingers equally distant to all the keys so that you can type better.
The keyboard was designed to be used this way. The grooves on ‘F’ and ‘J’ are there so that you can find the home position without looking at the keyboard. Try it now. Tilt your head upward so that you see the monitor but not the keyboard at all. Now take your hands off of the keyboard. Feel the keyboard with your fingers until you get your index fingers back on the grooves and your other fingers are on the keys described just previously. Practice this several times. You are only tilting your head up temporarily to prevent you from cheating and looking at the keyboard. When you look at the keyboard, you are cheating yourself and losing your own time because you are relying on your eyes finding the key (slow) rather than using your memory to know where the key is (fast).

Good article. I practice typing a lot and I find that I type much faster when I am relaxed and not feeling stressed to get something done. I have come a long way. I used to do 65. I now can do about 75 to 80 and I am working on improving that.

My question is what if the work that you do is more character recognition over words? So in other words I could be typing 1 1 1 b b 6 g h , etc and so saying those or even saying the word one is typing doesn't fit the situation matter of fact what I type doesn't really make sense in the saying the word as you type scheme of things.

what an excellent achievement of speed type! btw, thanks for the nice tips... I left behind so far from you.. I only type about 55 wpm (max. about 70 wpm, but it's so rare) with some mistakes. Need so much improvement.

I am so glad that I read this article. This will help me out a lot. I know that I type slow because I don't use the home keys, but in my defense I make hardly no mistakes. Now I can practice my heart out. I took the Support Services Test for the State and I was placed in the better qualified category but my typing speed was 34wpm with no mistakes. Needs work!!

Wow, 95wpm?! That's awesome. I'm only typing at 60 wpm, but I would love to reach 95 wpm. I do type on a daily basis, but I don't practice my typing skills to improve. Seeing that you type as fast as you do makes me want to improve my own speed.

I type 35 wpm , I would like to build up my typing speed as well. I type each day using my computer.
I have been typing for about 4 years straight now and someday's I get a higher speed then other days.
I have a Office Assistant Certificate and can also do some Clerical work as well.
I am currently in College and have hopes of furthering my education.

This is so true. I am always preaching this to everyone that says that they can't type.....I type at about 90wpm myself but it may be faster now because I type so much. sometimes when someone wants me to write something down, I find it easier to type than to rely on my shorthand skills.....can you really type up to 160wpm??? Something for me to work toward....

Thank you for the information. I wasn't aware that it was possible to type 160 WPM. I didn't learn to type until I took a college course several years ago. I could definitely use the tips and some additional practice. I believe I currently max out at 50 WPM, but there is definitely room for improvement.

Thanks for all this information. I have been struggling with my speed typing and my hand and eye coordnation so that I can type faster and faster. This is one of the classes that I need to complete for my Associates Degree and I am struggling and losing confidence that I could even accomplish typing faster than the required speed, so I have taken a break for this last class that I need to graduate.
