Sorry to hear of your double bad luck. I got my admin position following my soon to be divorce when I was 50 yrs. old in NYC, a very competitive environment, so I here is my totally biased suggestions. I know this is a controversial suggestion but I truly believe it with all my heart - you must do everything in your power and budget to appear as young and hip as is appropriate. I'm not suggesting plastic surgery but I am suggesting that you get a hip wardrobe, visit a make-up counter and find out how to look as good as you can, go to a good hairdresser and have your hair professionally cut and styled, and definitely cover the grey. Age discrimination/bias is REAL. In a just world it would not exist but it does and it is a waste of time and potential employment to pretend it is not. Do all you can to be upbeat, optimistic and fun to be around. Let's face it - as we grow older, we can have many personal and family problems, but we absolutely must not bring them to the office. In fact, taking time to make yourself look and feel good, and working on a positive outlook is not only helpful to potential employers, it's helpful for us too. I found work in banking which tends to be a little less youth oriented than other fields. And don't believe that all firms want young & attractive. Those young girls often come with a host of problems - immaturity, take off work too often, goof off, gossipy, etc. You have lots of offer so believe it and don't give up. Good luck to you!

Currin,
After having resigned my position with the State over a year ago, thinking I was going to retire with my husband---he LEFT me! My former position was a rather good one and now I'm working part-time for nearly minimum wage, seeking another Admin. Asst. position. However--I am 58 years old. Your articles and posts seem to be geared for the those quite a bit younger than me--those with whom I will be competing! How can I get tips for re-entering at a more mature age? I have a wealth of computer skills and knowledge and am personable, but why hire someone who is 58 when you can get a young, attractive girl with unbounded energy?!
