How Admins Can Fight Sexual Harrassment

Sexual Harassment Training Yields Limited Results

Training can help workers deal with sexual harassment and perhaps even stop it.

But there’s an apparent disconnect between the training employers are required to provide and what employees recall receiving.

Liability and Retention Issues May Spur Employers to Act

Still, employers should be highly motivated to create an environment that prevents sexual harassment, since they can be held liable for the actions of independent contractors and even clients – not just their own employees.

But employers aren’t always receptive when staff complain of sexual harassment, recalls one admin, who says that while working as a hospital admin she was groped by inebriated patients twice.

“The hospital management showed me zero support,” she says. “It was me against the world, as if I were a renegade. If we want to keep nurses in the workforce, we’re going to have to do a better job of supporting them.”

Attorneys should pursue assault cases with law enforcement and give harassed workers access to counseling, she says. “If we don’t talk about these problems, we’re never going to be able to fix them.”

What to Do If You’re Harassed:

  • Confront the harasser, and make it clear the attention is unwanted.
  • Report the harassment to your supervisor or to a higher authority if your supervisor is the harasser. Go to a government agency or the courts if necessary.
  • Document the harassment promptly in writing.
  • Seek support from friends, relatives, colleagues or your state administrative association.
