Eight Ways to Take a Day for Yourself
AdminSecret
Even if you absolutely love your job you probably need a little mini-vacation from the office from time to time. You really, really could use a day off? Need a little bit of time to yourself for some much-needed rest and relaxation? Can’t bring yourself to be honest about it to your boss? Don’t worry, we totally understand. It’s important to take care of yourself — physically and mentally — and sometimes you just have to put yourself first, no matter how dedicated you are to your job. You’ll return to your job rested, refreshed, and ready to take on the world!
This tongue-in-cheek guide will help you discover the perfect excuse you need to get yourself out of anything!

“My grandmother died.”
This one is a tried-and-true classic because it really works, and it should work for you no matter who you are. There’s very little chance that any of your coworkers have actually met your grandmother, so you’re unlikely to get tripped up on that level. If you play your cards right, you might even get more than one day off for this, if you factor in travel time to the “funeral.” There is one caveat: This excuse only works for people under a certain age. If you’re 60 years old, it’s unlikely that your grandmother would still be alive unless you come from a family of vampires. And, of course, remember what you kept in mind when you were using this excuse in school: You can’t use it more than twice! At least not at the same job…

Lighten up people. It was clearly meant to be entertainment rather than solid advice. And I was thoroughly entertained.

I thought it was funny, and who doesn't at least DAYDREAM about doing these sort of things? To the finger waggers before me: shame on AdminSecret? Give me a break - tongue-in-cheek means "not entirely serious."

Ha! Yes, I like the serious career advice I get on AdminSecret, but it's fun to giggle too! I'm totally going to use that cable guy advice ;)

I actually thought it was pretty hilarious. Come on, we've ALL been tempted. It's good to just laugh sometimes, even if you aren't actually going to do it.

Oops! You got us. This should have been in a Humor section. We're not honestly advocating lying, we just thought a light-hearted look at wanting a day off might be good for a laugh. Sorry it did not come off as funny!

Job skills? Seriously? Come on, folks, let's put this in the "humor" (I use this term guardedly regarding this article) area where it belongs. Very UNprofessional, disappointing article for the Tips & Skills area of what purports to be a professional site!

I agree this is a poor article for this site. Suggesting excuses to take a day off is not a way to make you a better admin.. Don't people realize when you take a day off, that your co-workers have to take up the slack and cover for your duties, which makes your own workload that much heavier. If you need an 'excuse' to take a day off, even for your own mental health, be honest about it with your supervisor/boss. If you are not up to doing your job, mentally, what good is it having you there?

This is totally ridiculous! Shame on you for coming up with stupid lies and encouraging people to actually use them. What a sad world we live in when we resort to flat out lieing to get out of work... that we're getting paid for! Shameful... We should be teaching our children about truthfulness at ALL times.
